接下來是校長跟你們觀愛海洋生物: Opihi, 嚐試生吃...
沒有同學敢試, 居然是你第一個來試... 反應是... "yell!" (吐出來)
這位同學更慘, 勇敢吞下去, 馬上作嘔...
lunch note from the teacher:
Quite a few children were absent so we invited our neighbors, Room 2 to
join us for the lion presentation. A BIG thank yo to Sherbie and the Lam
family for bringing Mr. Kelfred from the Hawaii Lion Dance Association.
We
are learning more about the Chinese lion and culture. Mr. Kelfred told
us
how to tell a lion and a dragon apart. Ask us to see if we remember. He
brought two large lion heads and let us touch and experience being in
the
head and tail. We were very careful with both, as one was a $1000 dollar
lion head. Sherbie's mommy continued working with some children making
couplets. mahalo to Lauren's daddy who brought two kinds of gao for us
to
try. One was the traditional gao and the other was a coconut gao. Both
were
delicious and many children had seconds.
Mrs. Hook came to visit us to share opihis with us. We used our senses
to
see, smell (very fragrant!) and taste (no seconds and some firsts!)and
feel
(the hard shell with algae and seaweed on it, and the slimy opihi out of
it's shell).
She showed us how the opihi clings to the rock and if you aren't quick
with
the knife, the opihi will hold on to the rock really tight. That opihi
is
pretty tricky! With a spoon, Mrs. Hook removed the opihi from it's shell
and washed it well with cold water. After adding a little salt, we were
all
invited to try them. No pressure, only the willing tried it. Poor Larken
took a tiny taste and gagged. We gave him lots of water and a big claps
for
trying. he was very proud of himself! Did you know Mrs. Hook can eat
them
right off the rocks! It is definitely an acquired taste. Ms. Loo and
Mrs.
Cosper tried opihi for the first time. And well, Mrs. Moats had seconds!
